Reference architecture: air quality monitoring

This page documents how we design a complete air quality monitoring system, layer by layer, from the station at your gate to the screen. It is a reference design that we adapt to each site and each operational question. It does not describe one specific existing installation.

LAYER BY LAYER

What each layer does.

01Sensing

A compact station measures the air people actually breathe on site: PM2.5 and PM10 particulates plus a weather suite with temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction. Placement matters as much as hardware, so station siting is part of the design rather than an afterthought.

02Connectivity

Stations report over cellular IoT. Coverage in the Emirates is excellent, payloads are small and each station stays independent of site networks, which simplifies both deployment and IT approvals.

03Cloud platform

A secure ingestion service authenticates each station, validates payloads and stores the readings as time series. Device management keeps identity, configuration and remote updates in one place, so stations can be adjusted and maintained remotely.

04Data and intelligence

Analytics separate a passing dust event from a chronic problem: daily and seasonal trends, threshold alerts on the health numbers and comparisons between stations. Wind direction read against particulate peaks is what points at a source instead of a guess.

05Dashboards and decisions

Facility and community teams see current readings, trends and alerts on a web dashboard, and an API feeds the data to signage, apps or reporting systems. The output is a defensible record of the air on your site, continuous through summer and through dust.

This is a reference design, not a datasheet of an existing installation. We adapt every layer to the site, the budget and the questions the operator needs answered, and we deliberately name no third-party vendors here because component choices belong to each project.
